7.1.1. Configuration of Windows XP


With Windows XP Home and Professional, the following settings should be made:



  1. Windows Explorer and “My Computer” settings

    Open My computer and make the following changes:



    • Maximize My Computer

    • in the “View” menu select “Status bar”

    • in the “View” menu select “Details”

    • in the “View” menu select “Arrange icons by” and then “Name”

    • in the “Tools” menu go to “Folder options” and make the following settings



      • on the “General” tab



        • select “Use classic Windows Desktop”

        • select “Use Windows classic folders”

        • select “Open each folder in the same window”

        • The path now reads as follows

      • on the “View” tab make the following settings:



        • Remember each folder’s view settings - OFF

        • Hide extensions for known file types - OFF

        • Show separate files on Desktop - ON

        • Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) - ON

        • Show compressed files and folders in another colour - OFF

        • Launch folder windows in a separate process - OFF

        • Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items - OFF

        • Hidden files and folders:

        • Show hidden files and folders - ON

        • Do not show hidden files and folders - OFF

        • Display the full path in the address bar - ON

        • Display the full path in the title bar - ON

        • The path now appears as follows

        • to finish click on “Apply”

        • then click on “Like current folder”.

        • now answer “Yes” to the security question.





    • In the “My computer” window set the column width with the mouse as follows:



      • Name : about 1/3 of the width of the window

      • Size : about 12 characters

      • Date modified : set so that the date and time are clearly visible on the right-hand side

      • Type : appears automatically



    • These settings must be saved in Tools/Folder options/View and “Like current window” (pay attention to a maximized window).



  2. Control Panel “View”

    Click on Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display and “Display Properties” will appear



    • “Themes” tab:



      • select “Windows Classic”

      • confirm the setting by clicking on “Apply”



    • “Desktop” tab:



      • select “None” from the list.

      • click on “Monitor power”

      • stay on “Power schemes”

      • set “Desktop”

      • Turn off hard disks - set to “Never”

      • System Standby - set to “Never”

      • click on “OK”



    • “Display”



      • in the “Themes” list select “Windows classic”

  3. “Web” tab



    • switch on “Display web page on Active Desktop”

    • select “Desktop items”

    • deactivate “My current home page”.

    • save changes with OK.



  4. on the “Effects” tab



    • on the “Effects” tab, all control fields will be switched off

  5. without a VISIO-PC: on the “Settings” tab



    • Colour quality: “True Color (32 Bit)”

    • Screen resolution: 1024 x 768

    • Confirm settings.

    • click on “Advanced”

    • on the “Troubleshoot” tab



      • set Hardware-Acceleration to “Full”

    • on the “General” tab



      • select “Restart computer before applying new display settings”

      • click on “Apply”



    • with VISIO-PC: on the “Settings” tab

      When using a VISIO-PC the screen resolution must be set to 1280 x 1024 at 60Hz.



      • Colour quality: “True Color (32 Bit)”

      • Screen resolution: 1280 x 1024 at 60Hz

      • Click on “Advanced”

      • Select “Restart the computer before applying the new display settings”.

  6. Customize Start menu

    Go to Start/Settings/ “Task bar and Start menu” to access Start menu properties



    • on the “General” tab.



      • “Use personalized menus” – switch on.

      • Your settings will be applied when you close the dialog by clicking on “OK”.





  7. Control Panel, Regional and Language Options:



    • “Languages” tab



      • switch off “Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)”

      • switch off “Install files for East Asian languages”

      • click on “Apply”





  8. Control Panel, Users and Passwords:



    • “User” tab



      • “User must input user name and password” - deactivate

    • on the “Advanced” tab



      • “Before logging in press CTRL+Alt+Delete” - activate

  9. Logging on to Windows XP



    • go to Start/Run and type in the command

      “control userpasswords2”

      Return



      • select “User must log on”

  10. “Control Panel” “System”



    • on the “Advanced” tab under “Performance”



      • select “Settings”



        • this should be set to “Let Windows choose what’s best for my computer” and confirmed with OK.







  11. I Control Panel under “Mouse”



    • on the “Pointers” tab



      • switch off “Enable pointer shadow”.
